Aussie Expats – Giving Back In Singapore

Aussie Expats – Giving Back In Singapore

This week we’re taking a break from personal finance strategies and outlining how we, as Australian expats in Singapore, can give back to the community. Personally, I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to work with inspiring people and a great team, in the lion city of Singapore.

For most Australian expats that we work with, one year spent working in Singapore would typically be worth up to 5 in Australia when we consider the financial possibilities. Our ability to accumulate wealth in this fast-paced, low-tax, innovative nation is a true financial blessing, so we believe it’s important to give back both in terms of our time and resources to this city state that has provided us with such great opportunities.

Outlined below are just some of the inspiring organisations that you can get involved with and volunteer for as an Aussie expat in Singapore:

1) ANZA Action – ANZA is the Australian and New Zealand Association in Singapore connecting Australian and New Zealand expats. They have a wide range of activities you can get involved in. ANZA Action was established to support our ethos of ‘giving back’ to a community and the country that we all call home! Our involvement gives you an opportunity to interact with different areas of need within the Singapore community. We believe this allows our members a way to make their stay in Singapore more meaningful.

2) Rotary Club of Singapore – Having been a Rotarian for many years since living in Perth, I can personally say this is an excellent organisation to be part of, particularly if you’re looking for a wide range of activities to get involved in. Becoming a Rotarian connects you with a diverse group who share your drive to give back.

3) RDA Singapore – The Riding for the Disabled Association Singapore (RDA Singapore) provides equine-assisted therapy (also known as hippotherapy) to children and adults with physical and mental disabilities. Having personally been involved with RDA WA in Perth, I can personally say that this is an incredibly rewarding opportunity to see first-hand the difference that you’re making in people’s lives.

4) AWARE Singapore – The Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE) was launched in 1985 as an organisation dedicated to research and advocacy on gender equality and the status of women in Singapore. AWARE has since worked on a range of issues from workplace discrimination to sexist portrayals of women in the media. Volunteering with this organisation can provide women in Singapore with a strong support system and help many get through difficult times in their lives.

5) Action for Singapore Dogs (ASD) – As a dog lover personally, I couldn’t help but include this one in our list. The Action for Singapore Dogs group helps to improve the welfare of stray and abandoned dogs in Singapore. The group works with its volunteers to help foster needy pups, fundraise for the foundation, and assist at their Adoption and Rescue Centre to find suitable new homes.

6) ExpatGiving – If you’re not sure which organisation you’d like to be part of but know that you want to give back to the community, ExpatGiving may be an excellent place to start. Expatgiving is a volunteer-run NFP that connects skilled professionals from different nationalities and backgrounds with volunteer opportunities in the local Singaporean community and APAC. Through bridging the gap between “Locals” and “Expats” we are aiming to contribute to those organisations in need for professional support to make a change for better lives. This is our way to thank the local community for their very warm welcome.

There are many outstanding organisations in Singapore and I’m sure we’ve missed some inspiring groups. If you’ve had a great experience as an expat volunteering with an organisation in Singapore, send us through their details and we’ll add them to our list.
