Australia’s capital gains tax landscape just shifted, and if you’re an expat, the details matter more than ever. In this episode, Atlas Wealth Group’s James Ridley (MD, APAC) sits down with Ben Turner (MD, Tax) to unpack the CGT indexation bill that passed both houses of parliament on 26 June 2025, and what it means for Australians living or working overseas.
From 1 July 2027, the long-standing 50% CGT discount will be replaced by inflation indexation — but there’s a critical catch. To qualify, you must never have been a foreign or temporary resident at any point during the asset’s testing period. One day offshore can disqualify you from indexation on the entire asset, with no apportionment.
