Expat Chat Ep 35 – What Is A Expat Financial Planner?

Welcome to our thirty fifth episode of #Expatchat where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat.

In today’s Expat Chat we discuss what a expat financial planner is and what Australian expats need to be aware of when obtaining when obtaining financial advice form a financial planner.

It is highly encouraged that Australian expats seek advice from a expat financial planner however unfortunately the global financial advice space isn’t  as highly regulated as the Australian financial services sector nor does it have the same level of consumer protection.

Discussion Points on Todays Podcast Episode

In this episode we will run through the three different type of financial advisers that Australian expats will meet. When you are seeking financial advice as a Australian expat you will be met with three categories of financial advisers:

  1. Those who say they can help however they don’t have a lot of experience in specialising in this area and mainly provide advice to Australian tax residents;
  2. The infamous offshore financial advisor who really isn’t an licensed adviser but a insurance salesman trying to sell you a 10 year offshore savings bond which is a product so punitive to the client that this form of product has not been sold in Australia or the UK for over 20 years;
  3. And last of of all the specialist expat financial planner (like Atlas Wealth Management) of which there are unfortunately too few in the market.
